Constraint as a Design Principle
Three biological systems, stigmergic coordination in social insects, the topological neighbour rules that keep starling flocks coherent, and the geometric self-righting of tortoise shells, each show a kind of implicit Byzantine fault tolerance: robust collective behaviour with no explicit consensus, no central authority and no reliable communication. The paper reframes the constraints of contested environments, unreliable comms, denied localisation, decentralisation and scarce compute, not as obstacles to patch over but as design principles that produce resilience when embraced directly. A conceptual framework, and the intellectual spine of the survivability work that follows.
